Prayon takes the essence of its products from the natural environment, and its activities are environmentally friendly.
We monitor the quality of our surface water effluent and control our impact on air, soil and sub-soil quality by constantly improving our production processes and monitoring our waste. Our focused action to reduce the negative impact of our activity has enabled us to achieve ISO 14001 certification.
We have made a commitment to sustainable development in many areas.
Our manufacturing processes are efficient in terms of energy and raw materials. The steam generated by the manufacture of sulfuric acid is recovered for use as an energy source instead of other fuels.
Our production facilities at Engis and Puurs will shortly be fitted with power cogeneration units. At Engis, this will mean a 47% reduction in CO2 emissions.
We utilize our by-products and waste. We are the only phosphoric acid manufacturer to utilize 90% of our calcium sulfate, which is sold to the plaster and cement industry. The fluorine in phosphate ore is turned into fluorinated salts for toothpaste. We also sort and re-use waste wherever possible.
We optimize transport, both externally (by using water transport as much as possible) and within production sites, where handling is minimized by means of an integrated activity chain.
Finally, we are conducting a feasibility study into a project to burn sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants. The aim of this project is to recycle cinders for their P2O5 content in fertilizer manufacturing. This is yet another example of the recyclability of phosphates in wastewater.
